In order to minimise the risk of waterlogging in various parts of the city in the monsoon, the Municipal Corporation of Kashipur (MCK) will reward those who present proof using photos and videos showing people throwing garbage in public places, especially in drains and vacant plots. The corporation will impose a penalty on the guilty party and take legal action depending on the intensity of the offence, said the Kashipur municipal commissioner Vivek Rai. He told The Pioneer that monsoon is about to reach the State soon and the corporation has started taking all precautionary measures to minimise waterlogging across the city. He said that MCK has started cleaning drains and will clean all main drains once again before the onset of monsoon to ensure rainwater drains smoothly.
However many people throw garbage in drains or garbage accumulated in vacant plots starts flowing with water and gets stuck in drains that often leads to overflowing drains or waterlogged roads. “Considering these issues, we have decided to impose penalties on people found throwing garbage in public places. Many people tend to throw garbage, especially single-use plastics, in drains even during the rain which leads to drain blockage which subsequently leads to waterlogging,” added Rai. He said that there are nearly 72 drains out of which the corporation mainly focuses on the thorough cleaning of 12 main drains to ensure waterlogging does not occur there. He said that the corporation has also started demolishing slabs or structures built illegally over drains by locals that affect water flow during the rainy season. “We have demolished such structures in over 100 locations so far.
Many have stated they will demolish these structures in the coming days on their own. We will act against them too if these are not demolished in the stipulated time,” said the commissioner. He appealed to the people to not throw garbage in drains, or open spaces and burn it or else, the corporation will take action against them if they find proof like photos and videos against the offenders.
