Rains cause disruption & death; two dead & 116 roads blocked

Moderate to heavy rains in various parts of the State on Sunday resulted in two deaths in the Udham Singh Nagar district while at least 116 roads were closed to traffic in various parts of the State. According to information from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) heavy rain in Misserwala village in Kashipur area of Udham Singh Nagar damaged two homes at 3 AM resulting in death of two persons while one was injured. With consistent rain in the mountains the level of water in the Ganga in Haridwar reached 291.50 metres at 4 PM, a few metres below the danger level of 294 metres. The rains and resulting landslides also blocked at least 116 roads in various parts of the State.

According to officials in Dehradun district the national highway 707A was blocked by debris at Lakhwad bend. One national highway, five state highways, one main district road and one other road along with 30 rural motor roads were reported to be blocked in the district. In Bageshwar district two rural motor roads were reported to be blocked while in the Uttarkashi district the Rishikesh-Yamunotri national highway 94 was blocked by debris between Radi Top and Silkyara, the Rishikesh-Gangotri national highway 108 was blocked ahead of Bandarkot, Ujeli Sungar Bhatwadi and one national highway and four rural motor roads were also blocked in the district. Electricity supply was also disrupted in parts of Chinyalisaud and Dunda areas with efforts underway to restore power supply.

In the Rudraprayag district the Rishikesh-Kedarnath national highway 107 was open though two rural motor roads were blocked. In Pauri district one State highway and nine rural motor roads were reported to be blocked while in Almora district nine rural motor roads were blocked. The Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway 58 in Chamoli district was open for traffic while nine rural motor roads were reported to be blocked. In Nainital district, two rural motor roads, one internal road and 10 rural motor roads were blocked while two State highways and 14 rural motor roads were blocked in Champawat district. In the Pithoragarh district one rural motor road and 11 rural motor roads were blocked. Efforts are underway to open the blocked roads, officials stated.
