Congress demands high level inquiry in Chamoli accident

Expressing grief over the tragic accident of Chamoli in which 16 persons were electrocuted to death on Wednesday the leaders of Uttarakhand Congress have demanded a high level inquiry in the incident. The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president, Karan Mahara who left Dehradun to visit the accident site said that everyone is standing behind the families who have lost their loved ones in the accident. He also offered condolences on the death of NSUI worker Sumit Aswal who died in the accident.
Holding the negligence of UPCL responsible for the accident, the PCC president said that it should have taken proper safety measures during the ongoing rainy season. He demanded that a compensation of Rs 50 lakh each should be paid to the dependents of the dead and said that a job to one member of the family should be provided. The PCC president ordered the president of district Congress Mukesh Negi to visit the accident site and ensure help to the affected. The leader of opposition (LoP) in the State assembly, Yashpal Arya also expressed grief at the deaths in the accident. He said that the loss of lives could have been prevented had the department and the administration become alert after the death of a chowkidar who was electrocuted. He said that the administration should undertake a search operation in Alaknanda river which flows near the accident site.
