Dehradun police arrested a 40-year-old man Rohit Pandey from Meerut on charges of committing alleged land fraud of Rs 4.25 crore with a resident of the Pauri district. The police had arrested another accused Mohammad Sameer Kamyab in the case on May 18 this year within 12 hours of getting the complaint, said the senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar.
He said that the police have been trying to nab all accused in the case. Many had even obtained anticipatory bail from the District and Sessions Court which was later revoked on the basis of the evidence present in the court. However, the culprits have been making continuous efforts to evade their arrest. Some have also reportedly obtained a stay on arrest from the high court but the accused Pandey had gone from Dehradun to his native home at Meerut to evade arrest. He was arrested by the police from Meerut on Wednesday, said Kunwar.
A complainant Ashok Kumar filed a written complaint at Clement Town police station on May 17 that some men approached two of his acquaintances last year regarding selling land near Saharanpur Road. Since they were interested in buying the land, they went with those men to check out the property who subsequently took them to a lawyer with property papers that called them genuine as per the complaint, said the SSP. They fixed the deal at Rs 11.50 crore and Kamyab along with his accomplices registered the land in their names on February 15 this year after which the buyers gave Rs 4.25 crore to the sellers via cash and bank transfers including Rs 2.40 crore to Kamyab.
They promised to pay the remaining amount after getting possession of the land. The buyers later came to know that it was a disputed land which is actually in the name of a Clement Town resident DK Mittal. The owner of the said land purportedly has no heir and his wife also died in 2021. Many land mafia have been trying to prove their claim on the land. It is an ongoing investigation and the police will arrest all the accused as per evidence, said SSP.
