MCD acts against incorrect info in property tax self-assessment

Thursday, 03 AUGUST 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will recover a penalty of four times the difference between the actual tax and the amount paid on the basis of wrong details provided in self-assessment forms. The tax section has already started the verification process of the self-assessment details provided by the property owners in the Rajpur area on the instructions of municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal. Tax superintendent Dharmesh Painuly said that all details are being checked during the verification process of self-assessment of properties by comparing the details provided by measuring the actual dimensions. The corporation has already imposed a penalty on nine commercial establishments on finding that the given property details do not match with actual measurements. These establishments include Goyal Tower, Hotel Apple Green, Brother Tower, Black Pearl, Mapple Tower, Ashnan Restaurant, Bhartari Tower and The North Pole. The MCD has imposed a total penalty of Rs 1.85 crore on these nine establishments. Painuly said that the corporation is preparing to recover the penalty from these establishments. The tax section has sent a two-week notice to these establishments regarding the submission of the penalty. If the owners do not comply, MCD will have to take legal action against them.

The total revenue of the property tax crossed the Rs 50 crore mark in the last financial year and the MCD is expecting to collect maximum tax this year to cross the mark of Rs 75 crore. For this, the commissioner has directed the tax section to take all possible measures to collect property tax from all establishments, especially commercial properties that bring more revenue than residential properties. Goyal said that the corporation has collected Rs 25 crore property tax in only four months and he believes that the tax section will collect more revenue than the last year. “We will continue to act against defaulters and those providing wrong property information to MCD,” added Goyal.
