Five Haryana tourists killed in Pauri landslide

Five family members including a nine year old child lost their lives after a resort was hit by a landslide in the wee hours of Monday triggered by heavy rains in the Jogiana village of Mohanchatti in Pauri. Only an eight-year-old girl survived the ordeal and all victims were residents of Haryana’s Kurukshetra area, as per the officials. They said that a local resident informed the Police Control Room on Monday that Night Life Paradise Camp had been hit by a landslide due to heavy rains in Mohanchatti village. The locals claimed that they could hear screams from the camp where many were feared buried under the debris. The officials said that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was informed about the said incident to carry out search operations. Another team was also sent to the site from the headquarters of SDRF besides a 15-member expert team with advanced search equipment like thermal imaging cameras and victim locating devices among others. They said that local people informed them that five people were staying in the camp out of which, the bodies of two men and one woman were recovered by officials in the wee hours of Tuesday while the bodies of remaining two were recovered on Wednesday. The officials informed that rescue teams faced immense difficulties in reaching the spot due to heavy rains and debris blocking the way at various places. The intensive search operation was continued on Wednesday morning and the bodies of the two remaining victims were found by noon, said the officials. The victims have been identified as Kamal Verma (36), Nisha Verma (32), Vishal (24), Nishant Verma (18) and Nirmit Verma (9). The bodies were handed over to the local police to carry out further proceedings, added officials.
