Anand Karaj Act fulfills aspirations of Sikh community: CM

The chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has said that by giving endorsement to the Anand Karaj Act, the Uttarakhand government has fulfilled a century-old demand of the Sikh community. He was addressing a ceremony organised at Saharanpur Chowk Gurudwara here on Thursday. The programme was organised by Guru Singh Sabha to express gratitude to the CM for implementing the system of registration of the marriages under the Anand Karaj of Sikh community. Speaking on the occasion, the CM said that the act will encourage women empowerment in the Sikh community. The compulsion of registrations of marriages will help in preventing child marriages and multiple marriages in the society. The act will also be helpful in ensuring alimony to the women from their husbands and preserve their rights of child adoption. It will also empower the widows to stake claim on heredity rights.
Dhami announced that Sarai attached with the Gurudwara will be provided with a sum of Rs 25 lakh from the minority welfare fund. He said that the demand for Anand Karaj act was first of all raised in the year 1909 and after that Sikh community had to wage a long battle for the act. He said that the State cabinet has given its approval for the act. Dhami said that the very old demand of the Sikh community for Kartarpur Sahib corridor has been fulfilled due to the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that the BJP government decided to organise Veer Bal Diwas to remember the sacrifice of the sons of Guru Govind Singh. Dhami said that a ropeway from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib is being constructed. The ropeway will increase the number of pilgrims visiting Hemkund Sahib because it will reduce the 19 km journey on foot to mere 45 minutes.
The mayor of Dehradun Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’, MLA Khajan Das and office bearers of Gurudwara Singh Sabha were present on the occasion.
