The principal of DAV (PG) College KR Jain said that there has been a decrease in the number of admissions in undergraduate courses this year. He said that the admission rate in the college has decreased by an average of 40 percent compared to past years. In the past, student admissions in the college were based on merit. However, this year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has made it mandatory for every student to successfully clear the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) in order to enroll in centralised universities, he added.
Jain further said that the admission process is nearing completion but more than two-thirds of the seats still remain vacant. Many students who have not attempted the CUET are requesting the UGC to allow them admission to their preferred colleges without clearing the test. He said that a significant number of students residing in the mountainous region were unaware of the CUET. This has resulted in a decline in the college’s admission rate for the current year.
He further said that it is important for the schools to educate their students regarding the CUET examination as a preventive measure against similar issues in the future.
