38th EDF starts to promote eye donation

Sunday, 27 August 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

In an attempt to promote eye donation in society, the 38th Eye Donation Fortnight (EDF) is being held across the nation from August 25 to September 8. Associate professor at the department of ophthalmology in Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), Dr Sushil Ojha informed that to combat corneal blindness in society, EDF is being organised at the national level. He said that corneal blindness is a condition that affects millions worldwide, rendering them unable to experience the beauty of the world around them. The cornea is transparent layer at the front of the eye and plays a vital role in focusing light onto the retina. So, vision impairment can result from the cornea being damaged or diseased which can lead to corneal blindness, he said.

He further added that the cornea transplantation can restore vision and bring back hope to those affected by corneal blindness. The EDF is being organised in India to help combat corneal blindness. During this fortnight various events will be organised to raise awareness about eye donation. He stressed that it’s time for communities to come together and spread the message that by pledging to donate eyes after death, one can give the incredible gift of sight to someone who is in need.

“By actively participating in the 38th EDF, people can become part of the movement that not only raises awareness but also brings real changes to the lives of countless individuals battling corneal blindness,” said Ojha.

The principal for GDMC Dr Ashutosh Sayana said that they have sent the proposal for opening an eye bank at GDMC. Apart from this, the State government hopes to start corneal transplantation soon in Dehradun. He informed that they had collaborated with AIIMS New Delhi for specialised training of their faculty, he added.
