Congress members demand extension of duration of session

The monsoon session of the Vidhan Sabha commenced on a stormy note on Tuesday with the opposition Congress members staging a Dharna on the staircase leading to the house. The Congress members were demanding extension of the duration of the session.
They held placards and shouted slogans against the government. Leading the Congress protest, the leader of opposition in the Assembly Yashpal Arya said that the State government has deliberately kept the duration of the session short as it is afraid of facing the questions of the opposition. He said that the people in the mountainous parts of the State are being rendered homeless due to the demolition drive. Arya said that the Congress party wanted to raise the issue of demolition drive, inapt handling of the recent rain triggered disasters, deteriorating law and order situation, plight of people of Joshimath and other issues but the government has kept the session for only four days. He said that in these four days the actual business of the house will be done for only two days.
The deputy leader of Congress legislature party Bhuwan Kapdi, MLAs Mamta Rakesh,Sumit Hridayesh, Anupama Rawat, Adesh Chauhan, Tilak Raj Behed, Rajendra Singh Bhandari, Vikram Singh Negi, Ravi Bahadur and Virendra Jaati took part in the protest.
The Congress members are expected to raise the issue of anti-encroachment drive in the mountainous areas of the State on the second day of monsoon session on Wednesday. The party is expected to press for a work adjournment motion for discussions on the issue. The government will table the first supplementary budget of the year 2023 -24 in the house on the day. The Assembly secretariat has so far received 614 questions from the members and the opposition members will try to corner the minister during the question hour.
The government is expected to table many important bills in the monsoon session which include separate bills for private and government universities of the State and grant of 10 per cent horizontal reservation for the Statehood activists and their dependents.
