African Union included in G-20

On the initiative of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the G-2O has opened itself to include the African Union into the powerful grouping of the top world economies. The inclusion is being hailed as a positive step to push the cause of the developing nations. The African Union has been given a permanent status in tune with Modi’s pitch for giving a greater voice to the Global South.
Amidst clapping of the applauding world leaders, Modi said that with the consent of all, he was inviting the African Union to join the G-20. Thereafter, the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar escorted the President of the Union of Comoros and the chairperson of the African Union Azali Assoumani to the podium of the global summit.
