The spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress Garima Dasauni has said that the tunnel collapse incident in Silkyara in Uttarkashi has exposed the status of disaster management and mitigation in Uttarakhand. She claimed that the government is not allowing the media to interact with the relatives of labourers trapped in the tunnel. Dasauni added that the government is trying to hide something which is manifested in reluctance of the ministers and officials in giving their statements. She also accused the State government for hobnobbing with the Navyug company involved in the construction of the tunnel. Dasauni questioned on what basis the Rs 2,000 crore work on the Rishikesh- Karnprayag rail project was given to the Navyug company on which a criminal case on the deaths of 20 labourers in Thane in Maharashtra has been registered.
The Congress leaders said that the Uttarakhand government has only focussed on managing the media and headlines only. She said that the patience of the 41 labourers trapped in the tunnel from the last ten days is fast waning. Dasauni said that the minister in charge of the Uttarkashi district is not visible though the labourers have been trapped for the last ten days. The Public Works Department (PWD) minister is also missing from the scene. She also accused the government of converting Silkyara into a laboratory where hit and trial methods are being used. Dasauni said that the Congress party is not against development but the people of the State do not require it at the cost of the environment and lives of people.
