In latest news from Uttarakhand, with uncertainty looming over when the trapped 41 would be evacuated out of the collapsed tunnel at Silkyara, a member of the National Disaster Management Authority Lt Gen (rtd) Syed Ata Hussain and secretary of the Union ministry of road transport and highways said that with the international evacuation norms being adopted to speed up the rescue works, the hopes of the stuck workers’ evacuation have brightened up. They averred that if things go on smoothly as per the latest rescue plans firmed up, the trapped workers would be brought out of their confinement in two/three days. Besides, they said that the workers despite remaining stuck in the tunnel for 10 days are hale and hearty, awaiting rescue. Hussain said that as the rescue operations kept on facing hurdles in a row, international rescue experts had to be roped in. “However, enough space left in the partially caved in tunnel and unhindered supply of electricity inside are helping the workers considerably in enduring the torment of prolonged confinement,” he added.
