The former Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president and Chakrata MLA Pritam Singh demanded the State government to take stringent action against the construction agency tasked with the construction of the tunnel at Silkyara in Uttarkashi district a part of which had caved in on November 12, trapping 41 labourers inside. He raised this demand during his visit to the collapse site on Wednesday.
While addressing the media persons, Singh said that he had visited the mishap site to check on the ground the government’s efforts in ensuring safe evacuation of the stuck workers. He alleged that the construction agency had flouted the safety norms- firmed up to ensure emergency evacuation of labourers engaged in tunnel projects – with impunity, putting the workers’ lives in peril. “These safety measures should have been put into place before commencement of such projects. The State government cannot shirk its responsibility in this tunnel collapse incident as it is its responsibility to thoroughly check whether the safety norms have been complied with well before approving such projects to be executed in the State,” he said.
