Winter chill intensifies in mountains, dry weather likely in State today

Sunday, 03 December 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN/JOSHIMATH

While the plains are witnessing sunny days and colder nights, the minimum temperature is reaching sub-zero levels in the mountainous regions of the State.

In high altitude regions like the Niti valley in Chamoli district, the springs and other flowing water bodies have frozen due to the cold. The considerable drop in temperatures is causing water bodies to freeze. Water appears to be dropping from the streams and waterfalls during the daytime but these freeze again as soon as the sun sets. The roads from Gamshali to Niti are getting covered in frost. The movement in the valley during this period consists mainly of army vehicles.

Meanwhile, the State meteorological centre has forecast that dry weather is likely to prevail in all districts of the State on Sunday. Mist is likely to occur in some parts of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts during the morning hours. The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to witness a mainly clear to partly cloudy sky. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be about 26 degrees Celsius and 10 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun today.

On Saturday, the maximum and minimum temperatures rose by a few degrees from normal in the plains while the maximum temperature registered a drop from normal in some of the mountainous regions of the State. The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in various places on Saturday were 25.2 degrees Celsius and 10.5 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 28.5 degrees Celsius and 10.5 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 14.4 degrees Celsius and 5.8 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 17 degrees Celsius and 6.2 degrees Celsius in New Tehri.
