In order to facilitate the safety and well-being of elderly people the Doon University has decided to permit them to use the university campus for morning and evening walks. The university’s vice chancellor Surekha Dangwal said that the decision has been taken to promote the safety and physical fitness of elderly individuals, given the increasing number of accidents on the roads, particularly involving the elderly.
In order to facilitate this arrangement and maintain security measures, elderly people are requested to present their identity cards which could be voter ID, Aadhaar card or driving license, for initial registration and subsequent visits to the campus. The university officials have emphasised that the said requirement is essential for the safety of all individuals, especially youngsters and therefore, it is required for elderly individuals to carry their identity cards with them regularly.
This initiative for elderly individuals is provided free of charge, allowing them to walk within the university’s 55-acre campus. Regarding the specific hours designated for senior citizens, officials said that they are allowed to visit the campus from 6 AM to 8 AM in the morning and 6 PM to 7 PM in the evening. The university consistently promotes positive practices that serve as valuable learning opportunities for the youth. For instance, on the first Monday of every month, the college celebrates a ‘no vehicle day’. Further, every Thursday all members of the university’s management wear Khadi clothes, the university officials added.
