In view of the recent theft and robberies in jewellery showrooms and other big stores in the Dehradun district, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh has appealed to the owners of such business establishments to enhance security arrangements as per the standards. He said that many big stores and showrooms, especially those that sell higher-end products and collect considerable cash on a daily basis like jewellery and automobile showrooms, do not have basic security arrangements like a security guard, sensors inside stores, digital locks or alarm system and installation of CCTV cameras. “The owners should at least put a sensor, digital lock or CCTV cameras in or near the space where they keep large cash sums or high-end items that can be potentially stolen or robbed. There are several variations of these products and the owners can select what they want as per their need,” Singh said.
He stated that keeping an eye on criminals is certainly the police’s job and they do monitor such activities. However, proper security arrangements in the business establishments prove to be of great help if something undesirable happens. It is pertinent to mention here that in the Reliance Jewels robbery case, there was allegedly no alarm system in the showroom and no security guard was at the door during the robbery, who could have alerted the police.
In the recent theft of over Rs 31 lakh in an automobile showroom, the owner had not installed any CCTV camera and had no lock system in the locker where they kept cash. “The installation of CCTV cameras helps police a lot in identifying a criminal. The police will eventually nab the culprit but these arrangements can potentially prevent the robbery and theft. Even if it occurs, data recovered from these devices will help police to catch culprits sooner,” he added.
