The Uttarkashi police arrested a Nigerian national identified as Amechi for allegedly duping a person of Rs 7.45 lakh by using foreign currency as a lure. The police said that the accused had arrived in New Delhi in August 2021 on a business visa. While living in a rented flat in Chhatarpur area, he used various social media platforms to dupe people. He had used the display photograph of a foreigner woman on his fake Facebook profile and used it to befriend an Uttarkashi resident to whom he had promised to send foreign currency in gift. He then sought money citing custom fee and other charges for which the victim ended up paying Rs 7.45 lakh. The victim finally lodged a police complaint in Purola in November last year. The police traced his location and arrested him from New Delhi. During questioning, he told the police that he used to make fake Facebook profiles displaying profile pics of foreigner women to befriend people and then promise to get them a job in a foreign embassy to seek money from them for various charges. He also used to promise his targets foreign currency in gift and demand money for various charges. The police are continuing the investigation to trace his accomplices and victims.
