A joint team of the Dehradun district administration, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD), the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the police issued about 183 challans on Thursday under the anti-encroachment campaign. The authorities collected a penalty of over Rs 1.34 lakh from those encroaching roadside areas across the city.

According to the officials, the corporation on Thursday issued 75 challans and imposed a penalty of Rs 82,400 while police imposed 73 challans and imposed a penalty of Rs 34,250. Besides this, RTO issued 35 challans and collected a penalty of Rs 17,500. These penalties were imposed on vendors for encroachments on stretches of Clock Tower to Premnagar, Shimla Bypass Road to Mehuwala Telpur Chowk, Araghar to Chhee Number Puliya and other main roads of the city.

Besides this, MCD also removed illegal hoardings installed on roads under this campaign.  The anti-encroachment campaign is being conducted on the orders of Dehradun district magistrate Sonika. She has formed five teams to remove encroachments from various roadside areas and intersections in Dehradun city that often lead to severe traffic congestion.

The DM on Thursday again ordered MCD, RTO and police to take preventive measures to ensure vendors do not encroach on the spot again by setting up their shops or carts. Some people have also protested against this anti-encroachment drive stating that it is snatching the livelihood of poor people. However, the DM said that the authorities are taking action only against illegal encroachments as as per the rules because their presence in roadside areas cause serious traffic jams and can also be fatal for commuters.
