In latest news from Uttarakhand, with the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill poised to be passed in the assembly, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami seems all set to script history. Sources close to him laud this move as a monumental one as Uttarakhand would pioneer the UCC implementation saga. Once this bill becomes law with the assent of the Governor, other State governments are likely to follow in Uttarakhand’s footsteps and most probably emulate the State’s model with minor variations from State to State. In line with the manifesto commitment, the CM on re-election in 2022 had constituted a committee headed by a former Supreme Court justice Ranjana Desai to prepare a draft on UCC. Just four days ago, she had submitted the bill to the CM. Dhami said that the curious attention of the whole country remained fixed on Uttarakhand about the content of the bill that was to become an act a day after.
