The chairperson of Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) has asked the police to organise awareness campaigns in all districts to educate women about their rights. She said this after receiving information about two incidents of minors bring kidnapped in two separate cases in the State recently.
Commenting on these incidents Kandwal said she was recently informed about a case involving the kidnapping and alleged rape of a minor girl in Doiwala. In light of this incident, Kandwal stated that she reached out to the Dehradun police to enquire about the matter. The police informed her that the accused had approached the victim through the social media app Instagram, enticing her before taking her along and committing the crime. She further informed that the accused had been arrested.
Kandwal further added she was recently made aware of the case of two sisters from Dharchula in Pithoragarh, who went missing under suspicious circumstances. Considering this, she had a conversation with the superintendent of police of Pithoragarh. During the conversation, it was revealed that the accused involved in the incident worked as a barber and had coaxed the girls to accompany him to Bareilly, where he was subsequently arrested and the girls were rescued and returned to their family members. Taking this into consideration, Kandwal said that she has instructed the police to take strict action against the accused in both the cases, in order to teach a lesson to those who commit such crimes. She has also directed the officials to ensure that all students in their respective schools are educated about these matters, particularly regarding the hazards of social media. Additionally, she has instructed the Haldwani police to take decisive action in a case wherein two young men allegedly molested a girl in a moving car.
