The chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW), Kusum Kandwal has said that stringent action should be taken against women who wrongfully accuse others of misconduct. She said this following an incident in which a woman in Haldwani accused two men of gang-raping her in a car. It emerged later that she had falsely accused them.
Commenting on the matter, Kandwal said that after becoming aware of this incident, she talked to the superintendent of police in Haldwani and urged him to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that appropriate action is taken against the accused. It was revealed during the investigation, supported by medical reports that the girl’s allegations were false and that no rape had occurred. Consequently, the police have registered a case of molestation against the accused individuals, she added.
Regarding this matter, Kandwal further said that the current situation of the case is not very clear. She said that she intends to speak with the superintendent of police in Haldwani once again to discuss the matter and the action taken in this case.
It will be recalled that earlier, a minor girl residing in a protection home in Haldwani had alleged that two individuals on duty took her out of the facility and that she was allegedly raped outside the premises. However, during the subsequent investigation, it was determined that the girl’s claim was false. In light of such incidents in which false rape allegations are levelled, Kandwal stated that the number of rape cases in the State has actually decreased due to various factors including increased awareness of laws and stricter actions. However, it has been observed that some women or minor girls are exploiting women’s rights by falsely accusing others of misconduct. Kandwal emphasised that if any woman falsely accuses someone of wrongdoing, they should not go unpunished and appropriate, stringent measures should be taken against them.
