The Congress held a symbolic Assembly session in the summer capital Gairsain on Tuesday to protest against the government’s decision to hold the budget session of the Assembly in Dehradun and its apathy towards Gairsain. The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara said that the BJP leaders claimed cold to be the main reason for not holding the Assembly session in Gairsain while Congress held the symbolic session amidst nine degrees Celsius temperature on Tuesday. Congress leaders Hema Purohit and Karan Mahara were the Assembly speaker and leader of the opposition respectively in the symbolic session.
Besides this, Manish Khanduri, Mukesh Negi and Sheeshpal Singh Bisht acted as opposition MLAs. Mahara said that the BJP-led government has been consistently trying to avoid important issues in the State. The Assembly is the temple of democracy but the government always attempts to suppress the voice of the opposition. He said that Congress has always fought for public interest issues and raised its voice in the house. Similarly, the Congress raised prominent issues in the symbolic session of the Assembly in Gairsain.
The Congress leaders held the public session on various subjects including land law, crimes against women, increasing unemployment, deteriorating law and order situation, injustice to Ankita Bhandari, bad condition of the health services, recruitment scams, Agnipath scheme, Joshimath subsidence and issues regarding disaster and prevailing corruption in the government. Mahara said that these issues are the general public’s concern and it is the opposition’s duty to convey them to the “deaf and dumb” BJP government. These are the issues that the government needs to address but the BJP is just trying to divert people’s minds through petty political tactics like introducing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and religious issues, Mahara said. He claimed that the government is protecting mining and land mafia and promoting liquor consumption with the new excise policy in the State.
