Spectacled Finch seen in Munsiyari after five years

Nature enthusiasts and bird lovers are enthused with the sighting of the spectacled finch bird in Munsyari area of Pithoragarh district. This bird, which usually inhabits the high altitude Himalayan regions is seldom seen in the lower altitudes. It is believed that it has arrived in the lower altitudes in search of food. Local Surendra Pawar said that pairs of the bird have been sighted at Khalia Top area of Munsiyari. He opined that sighting of this bird which is rarely seen in the lower altitudes may also be a sign of environmental changes.
The habitat of this bird is in the Himalayan region at an altitude of 2,400 metres. After heavy snowfall, they come to the lower areas in search of food and sometimes come down to 1,900 metres to 1,800 metres. Bird enthusiasts state that they are seeing this bird in this area after about five years.
Sub divisional forest officer Jwala Prasad said that the sighting of the spectacled finch in the area is a good sign.
The Forest department team is consistently patrolling
in the Pithoragarh region especialy as poachers become active in winter when wildlife comes to the lower areas after snowfall in the higher Himalayan regions. Forest range officer of Munsyari Vijay Bhatt says that people are being informed about wildlife and their importance in the environment.
