Police collect about Rs 2.5 crore in a month under verification drive

The police on Sunday imposed a penalty of over Rs 44.2 lakh on 442 landlords in Dehradun for not getting their tenants verified as per the rules. The police took this action under the verification drive to identify unverified and suspicious people living in the district as part of the police’s preparation in view of the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. The police have collected a penalty of about Rs 2.5 crore in the past one month under this verification drive. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh informed that various police teams conducted door to door visits to check verifications of tenants, employees, domestic servants, street vendors and others belonging to other states and districts. During the massive verification campaign that lasted for about six hours, the police verified and collected the personal information of a total of 4,209 people. The police also brought 301 suspicious people to the respective police stations after they failed to present any valid documents. The police also collected a fine of Rs 62,500 from 176 suspicious persons under the Police Act, the SSP added.
