Statehood agitators welcome life-term for 2 Rampur Tiraha convicts

In latest news from Uttarakhand, the Statehood agitators from Uttarkashi expressed satisfaction over the two convicts (retired PAC personnel) of the infamous 1994 Rampur Tirha incident being handed life-imprisonment by the Muzaffarnagar district court. In the same breath, they said that the quantum of punishment should have been more stringent and exemplary, given the heinousness of the crimes they had committed. Notably, when a large number of agitators were going to Delhi, demanding formation of Uttarakhand from erstwhile Uttar Pradesh on the intervening night of October 1 and 2, the security personnel deployed at the Rampur trijunction in Muzaffarnagar district of UP opened fire on them, killing seven agitators, and also sexually assaulted women agitators.
“We are, of course, happy with the culprits having received justice after a long hiatus of 28 years. However, we would have been happier had the punishment been harsher. If so, it would have meted out complete justice to the martyrs and victims,” said a prominent Statehood agitator Vijendra Singh Pokhriyal.
Echoing the same view, another Statehood agitator from the district Khushpal Singh Parmar said that the process of justice has not ended yet. “The convicted duo will appeal against the judgment in the higher courts and so things will drag on. Still, we are satisfied,” he added.
