Man arrested for killing his live-in partner

Monday, 01 April 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The police arrested a 23-year-old man on charges of killing his live-in partner whose decomposed body was found in a suitcase near Dehradun’s Asharodi area. The accused identified as Rashid killed Shahnoor (24) as he suspected her of having illicit affairs with other men, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said. Addressing a Press conference here on Sunday, he said that a woman from Haridwar named Shahrul Jahan stated in an application to the police on January 29 that her daughter who worked in Dehradun had been missing since December 26, 2023. According to her, Shanoor used to work in a beauty parlour located in Dehradun’s Sanskriti Vihar Colony.

The police registered the missing complaint and started the investigation. The police came to know during the investigation that Shahnoor was in a live-in relationship with Rashid and both lived in a rented room in Sanskriti Vihar Colony. He was absconding from Dehradun since her disappearance. The police received a tip off on March 30 that Rashid was seen roaming around his rented room who had probably returned to collect his belongings. The SSP said that a police team reached the spot and informed Rashid about the missing Shahnoor.  He denied having any information about her disappearance. “On feeling suspicious, Rashid was brought to the police station for detailed questioning. On strictly interrogating him, he said that he had strangulated Shahnoor to death on December 27 and stuffed her body into a suitcase. He then threw her body near the woods in Asharodi. He also took the police to the location where the team found the severely decomposed body of the victim. He was arrested from the spot,” the SSP said.

Singh said that the accused and victim started living together since September last year. According to him, Shahnoor had told him that she worked in a parlour but never actually mentioned where it was located. She often used to come home late and even the next morning. This made him suspicious that she was involved in illicit relationships with other people. “Rashid has stated that Shahnoor was also late on December 27 and when he questioned her she asked him to mind his own business and slapped him. This angered him and he strangled her. Then he withdrew Rs 17,000 cash from using her ATM card and bought a rope and a big suitcase. He stuffed her body in the suitcase and tied it to the back seat of Shahnoor’s scooter. He then went to a deserted forest near Asharodi and threw the suitcase in a ditch there,” Singh said. Rashid returned to Muzaffarnagar through that scooter and started working there. He returned to Dehradun to get his belongings from their rented room on Saturday when the police detained him.
