The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has sent bills to over 600 defaulters with a pending property tax of over Rs one lakh. All these defaulters are non-residential property owners and the tax section has asked them to submit the tax as soon as possible, the municipal tax superintendent Poonam Rawat said. The list of defaulters includes names of some property owners who have not paid taxes for the past two to three years and the tax section has informed them that the rate of penalty will continue to increase with time. These defaulters also include big government and aided educational institutions, government bodies and apartment buildings. Rawat said that the corporation has collected property tax of over Rs 10 crore in the first month of the new financial year 2024-25. The corporation collected Rs 1.75 crore on Monday itself. She said that the corporation provided an additional rebate of five per cent on the property tax submission in April which also motivated many to deposit tax on time. The tax section is currently focussing on recovering taxes from those who owe over Rs one lakh as property tax to the corporation. The MCD had set the target of collecting property tax of Rs 60 crore in the financial year 2023-24 but it could collect only Rs 58 crore. On the question of the MCD’s this year’s target for property tax collection, Rawat said that no target has been set for this year so far but the tax section is diligently working to maximise the tax collection to exceed the last financial year’s collection.
