Cases of skin allergies increase as temperatures rise in Doon

Doctors have observed a surge in the cases of skin-related ailments due to the rising temperatures in the summer. They have reported an increase in skin allergies among the local residents, attributing it to the rising mercury level leading to symptoms such as reddening of the skin, itching and fungal infections. The doctors have stated that increasing water intake can help effectively treat individuals suffering from skin allergies that tend to escalate during the summer months.

Head of the dermatology department of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Dr Shruti Barnwal said that she has observed various skin allergies with the rise in temperatures. She explained that as the mercury level rises and the atmosphere becomes dry, it can lead to skin issues such as redness in exposed areas, sunburn, itching and the development of black spots on the body. Additionally, the incidence of fungal infections has increased due to elevated temperatures, as sweating increases during this period, promoting fungal growth. Barnwal underscored the importance of taking necessary precautions to prevent skin allergies, recommending increased water intake and advising individuals to cover their bodies when outdoors to shield them from the sun. She also warned against outdoor activities during peak heat hours, typically between 2 PM and 4 PM.

Further, a skin specialist at the district hospital Dr Anil Arya emphasised that the intense sunlight during the summer season can lead to various skin allergies. This year, he has observed an increase in cases of sunburn among individuals with the start of the summer season. Typically, as the temperature rises, cases of sunburn, redness, itching and dark spots on the skin also increase. He recommended that individuals should take appropriate precautions to prevent skin allergies. They should stay hydrated and cover their bodies when going out in the sun. He strongly advised against self-treating skin allergies, as it can exacerbate the condition and instead urged individuals to seek medical advice.
