The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Tuesday demolished eight houses built on the riverbed of the Rispana that were constructed after 2016 in the Deepnagar area of the city. Besides this, about 15 families themselves demolished the portions of their houses that were built after 2016 on the government land, the additional municipal commissioner Gopal Ram Binwal said. On the second day of the demolition drive on the Rispana riverbed, the MCD along with the police team demolished eight houses that also included two-storey buildings. Some slum dwellers and local people raised objections and started protesting against the demolition but the police dispersed them. The MCD has demolished 60 encroachments in two days and about 15 portions of encroachments were demolished by people themselves. Due to the demolition of the houses, small children of some families were also seen crying in the open while some were busy collecting their belongings. Many slum dwellers also said they had purchased the land and built houses on it before 2016 but could not present concrete documents to support their claims due to which, MCD demolished their houses. The corporation has demolished over 60 encroachments in the past two days as per the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The MCD team will demolish encroachments in the Barighat area on Wednesday, Binwal said. Besides this, the officials said that the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) has also received over 250 objections against notices issued to 415 slum dwellers who built houses on the Rispana riverbed after 2016. The officials are currently analysing these objections after which, MDDA will possibly start the demolition process next week.
