The authorities on Thursday sent the bodies of nine trekkers to Karnataka, who lost their way while trekking back from Sahastra Tal in Uttarkashi district due to bad weather on Tuesday. The bodies were sent to Delhi in four ambulances by road in the afternoon from where the officials of the Karnataka government will take them to their State, a Dehradun District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) official said. The authorities had retrieved five bodies on Wednesday and four on Thursday morning. The 13 remaining trekkers were rescued safely from the incident site. The official informed The Pioneer that all nine bodies were brought to Dehradun at around noon on Thursday for the embalming process in a hospital. The administration had initially planned to send the bodies by air but due to certain circumstances, it would have taken two rounds to send nine bodies which would have meant more delay. This could have an adverse effect on the bodies considering which, the authorities sent the bodies in four ambulances equipped with the advanced facilities to keep the bodies safe till it reaches Karnataka. Besides this, five trekkers were also sent to Delhi by road. They returned from the base camp by the trekking route on foot. “These five trekkers were stranded but healthy enough to return by the trekking route on foot. They were accompanied by the personnel concerned. They reached the Uttarkashi district headquarters on Wednesday evening where the doctors conducted their health check up. They were brought to Dehradun on Thursday after which they were also sent to Delhi. The Karnataka government has made arrangements in Delhi to take bodies as well as rescued trekkers back to their State.”
