In view of the high temperatures in Dehradun, elderly people have reduced their physical activity during the ongoing summer. They have stated that engaging in physical activity and going for walks in the heat has been making them feel sluggish and lethargic. Considering this, experts advised that elderly people should not avoid physical activity during the summer as it could have adverse effects on their health.
Senior citizen Shashi Nath said that the State has noted a three to five degree increase in the mercury temperature this year compared to past years. As a result of this extreme heat, she has ceased her daily morning and evening walks. She pointed out that even in the mornings, the intense sunlight makes her feel lethargic while walking. Consequently, she has refrained from this physical activity during the summer season, she said.
Another senior citizen Rajesh Dimri stated that he has ceased going to the nearby society park to engage in physical activity. The higher temperatures have made it impossible for him to even leave the homes. He said that he feels unhealthy due to discontinuing the physical activities as a result of the rising temperature.
Many elderly residents in Dehradun have also voiced their worries about the lack of physical activity due to the high temperatures. They have observed that the escalating temperature is gradually causing them to become lazy and sluggish.
A physician at the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital Dr Naresh emphasised the importance of physical activity not only among adults but also among the elderly population. He observed that many senior citizens have stopped their morning and evening walks, as well as other physical activities, due to the hot weather. Naresh warned that the lack of physical activity in the elderly can lead to joint pain, nausea and a constant feeling of laziness. He advised that elderly individuals should avoid going outside during peak times and instead consider practicing Yoga and taking early morning walks to maintain their health in a positive manner.
