Uttarakhand police gears up for by-elections

Uttarakhand police will ask the Central government to provide seven companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to ensure free, fair and peaceful by-elections in the Manglaur and Badrinath Assembly constituencies of Haridwar and Chamoli districts respectively on July 10. The CAPF is part of the three-tier security system of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and strongrooms during elections as per the norms of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The forces will reach the State by the end of June, the additional director general of police (Crime, Law and Order) and the State police nodal officer for the election, AP Anshuman said. He said that the police officials concerned have been directed to identify vulnerable pockets in the constituencies to deploy sufficient security forces there and take the required steps accordingly. The police will soon start the submission process of licensed weapons by the owners in both districts. He said that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into force in both districts and the Flying Squad Team (FST) and Static Surveillance Team (SST) will also be activated for thorough checkings.
The department will provide additional police to Haridwar and Chamoli districts to carry out election duties if they demand, Anshuman said. He also informed that the police are preparing the inter-state border security plans for the by-elections. Besides this, the deployment plan of security officials is underway for elections which will be implemented soon. The paramilitary forces usually reach the State for elections 10 days before the elections considering which, the forces will be here June 30. The ADG said that they have also talked to the respective district administrations regarding election related matters including the announcement and implementation of section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) for smooth conduct of elections.
