With the monsoon approaching, the Health department is gearing up to take on the dengue challenge.  The chief medical officer (CMO) of Dehradun held a meeting with health department officials on Thursday to discuss preparations for controlling dengue cases. During the meeting, CMO Dr Sanjay Jain assigned responsibilities to the officials to prevent a dengue outbreak on the onset of monsoon.

Speaking on the preparation to prevent the vector-borne disease outbreak, he said that from Monday onwards, intensive awareness campaigns and source reduction activities would be conducted in the identified 60 wards under the Municipal Corporation.  “Apart from this, awareness campaigns and source reduction work will be done by ASHA workers at the community level. Necessary training is also being provided to all the ASHA workers in the area,” he said and added that the people would be made aware of the principal triggers of the dengue outbreak.  Pamphlets would be distributed through the garbage collecting vehicles of the Municipal Corporation.

Dengue testing kits are being supplied to all hospitals under the Health department. All the health facilities have been directed to prepare separate wards for the dengue/malaria patients. All the blood banks in the district have also been asked to inform about the availability of blood.

Jain further said that these preparations are being made in view of the upcoming monsoon season. In the initial phase, the primary objective is to make the public aware of the causes of the spread of dengue/malaria. Under the source reduction activity, the teams have been instructed to identify and destroy larvae sites in the localities.

He appealed to the people to clear stagnant water around their houses at least twice a week, maintain cleanliness and change the water in the cooler twice a week. He also advised using mosquito nets while sleeping.
