Concerned citizens and members of various groups congregated and took out a rally on Canal Road to protest against the proposed felling of trees for various construction and development works in Dehradun on Sunday. Ravi Chopra of People’s Science Institute exhorted the citizens to remain alert and register their protest wherever trees are being cut in Dehradun. He further said that in the urban local body elections, the people should vote for candidates who are nature lovers. Activists Anoop Nautiyal and Lokesh Ohri stressed on the importance of a green Doon and said that the environment should not be destroyed in the name of facilitating development. Others who participated in the demonstration also expressed similar views, questioning the policy of the government which they pointed out is leading to unplanned urbanisation, destruction of the environment and the resultant negative effects on Dehradun and the health of the people here. They pointed out that thousands of trees have been axed in Dehradun in recent years and many more are proposed to be cut for various construction and development works. The city has been experiencing the detrimental effects of such environmental degradation with the authorities persisting in their plans to cause further damage, they said. Members of Citizens For Green Doon, Making a Difference by Being the Difference and other public groups along with concerned citizens expressed their views and rallied carrying posters calling for protection of trees and the environment.
