At a critical time when people are struggling to save lives amidst effects of heavy rains, two young men in Haridwar had allegedly been jumping into the swollen Ganga river in Haridwar for social media likes and money. They had earned thousands of followers within seven to 10 days on Instagram and their ‘viewers’ also started sending them money.  The police finally took action against them on Tuesday after one of their videos went viral on social media, the Haridwar senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobhal said. He said that both men Chetan Kumar and Akash Pandey live in a slum in Kankhal area and after they gained some followers and money through such activities, they started doing it more to earn money. Some pilgrims and tourists also complained to the police about such activities in the area. Considering this, the police challaned both men under the Police Act. He said that Akash had garnered over 1,000 followers while Chetan had over one lakh subscribers. The police asked them to remove all such videos from their respective social media accounts and got them blocked. The police also warned of taking strict legal action against them if they repeat such activities again, SSP added.
