A Nepali labourer died and another got seriously injured after getting trapped under debris that fell from a mountain near Marwari bridge at Jyotirmath in Chamoli district in the wee hours of Tuesday. The officials said that some labourers lived in a small house near Marwari bridge near Badrinath national highway. Due to heavy rain in the area, debris fell over their house around 2 AM on Tuesday. The police were called at the spot where they found out that two labourers were buried under the debris and only their heads were visible. One of the labourers had died at the spot. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the police called the rescue team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) at 2:30 AM. The team reached there amid heavy rainfall at night under the supervision of sub inspector Vineet Devrani. He informed that it was quite challenging to rescue the trapped man amid heavy rainfall as debris started falling down soon after the SDRF team started the rescue operation. The SDRF constable Pradeep Lasiyal and constable Shekhar Nagarkoti showed presence of mind in such a difficult situation and stopped the falling of stones with the help of a mechanical excavator nearby. This helped in saving the life of the trapped labourer while keeping the whole rescue team safe, he said. The deceased labourer has been identified as Gum Bahadur (35) from Surkhet village in Nepal and the injured labourer was Dinesh Bahadur (22) from Kalikot in Nepal. He was taken to the community health centre in Jyotirmath for treatment.
