Culture Dept defers Garhwali-Kumaoni language workshop yet again

The native language training workshop which was scheduled to be organised by the Culture department in August 2023 has been delayed yet again due to various factors including construction work and a busy schedule at the Himalayan Cultural Centre (HCC). Considering this, the director of the Culture department Beena Bhatt stated that the department had initiated workshops to promote and teach the Garhwali, Kumaoni and Jaunsari languages at the HCC in the previous year. However, ongoing construction of boundaries, museums and replicas has hindered the department from organising the dialect training programme at the HCC in the previous year for adults and senior citizens, she claimed. Additionally, the busy schedule and events at the HCC have also hindered the department in organising the dialect training workshops.

She further added that as soon as the event and construction work at HCC is completed, the dialect training workshop for interested individuals will commence. The workshop is expected to be organised this year, in 2024. She also highlighted that they are planning to organise many other activities to promote the culture of Uttarakhand among people.

It will be recalled that the Culture department intended to organise a folk dialect training workshop at HCC in previous year to raise awareness about the regional language. People of any age can enroll themselves in dialect training. It was also decided that the workshop will be conducted every Saturday and Sunday from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM to promote and teach the Garhwali, Kumaoni and Jaunsari languages. Additionally, experienced teachers in regional languages will be hired to teach the dialects at HCC.
