Animal rights activists seek freedom for animals

Sunday, 18 August 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Animal rights activists here demanded freedom for all animals at a demonstration staged at the Buddha Temple on Saturday. A number of activists participated in the event, holding placards with messages like ‘Dairy Destroys Motherhood,’ ‘Meat is Murder,’ and more. The activists also showed undercover footage of industries where animals are  exploited, including that of artificial insemination of cows and buffaloes, separation of calves from mothers in dairy farms, and the debeaking and crushing of one-day-old male chicks.

Activist Anurupa said, “The reason so much cruelty, abuse and violations are happening is because we view animals as resources and not sentient beings.”

Another activist, Ankur Negi, stated that if people keep demanding animal products even after knowing the truth, the animals will keep suffering due to human greed. “It’s our collective responsibility to stop exploiting them first and keep fighting for their rights,” he added.

Khushi highlighted that casteism, racism and many other prejudices inflict suffering on fellow humans. Similarly, the belief that humans are superior to animals and can do what we want to them, picking and choosing which animals have the right to live and which don’t, is causing unimaginable suffering to billions of animals – a form of discrimination called speciesism.
