Monsoon session of Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha likely to be stormy

The monsoon session of the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha commencing from August 21 at Bharadisain in Garisain, Chamoli district, is likely to be stormy with the opposition Congress determined to corner the State government on a number of issues. The meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will be held at Bharadisain at 6 PM on Tuesday. The party will give a final shape to its strategy for the session in this meeting. The leader of opposition (LoP) in the State Assembly, Yashpal Arya told The Pioneer that the law and order situation in the State has got completely derailed and the Congress will raise this issue prominently in the Vidhan Sabha. He said that crimes against women are increasing at an alarming pace. The incidents of rape, gangrape and molestation are increasing, due to which an envirinment of fear prevails in the State.

Arya said that the State government is not doing anything to address the issue of women’s safety. He added that illegal mining is rampant in the State and the riverbeds and the nearby forests are being dug with impunity. The LoP said that the Congress party will also raise the issue of disaster mismanagement. He said that the State government has failed in dealing with frequent disasters. Arya said that the Disaster Management department is working in an ad-hoc manner. He said that the State government had claimed to have brought a package of Rs 1,000 crore for the people affected by disaster triggered by land subsidence in Joshimath town but it is not visible anywhere. Arya said that the farmers have been affected by incessant rains and flooding but the government has no relief plan for them. The LoP said that the Congress will ask the Assembly speaker to take up the issues of disaster and law and order situation under rule 310.

Meanwhile, the Pushkar Singh Dhami government is likely to table many important bills during the session which is commencing on Wednesday. It will also table a supplementary budget of about Rs 5,000 crore in the house. On the opening day the house will pass a motion of condolence on the death of Kedarnath MLA Shaila Rani Rawat and other former members of the house who have died recently.
