The Uttarakhand Congress has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe monitored by a sitting judge of the High Court in the death of Waseem alias Monu of Jhabreda in Haridwar district.

The man died after reportedly jumping into a pond while trying to escape the police while allegedly smuggling bovine meat.  His family members however allege that Waseem was brutally beaten up by the police before his death due to drowning.

On Thursday senior leaders of the state Congress led by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara, leader of opposition (LoP) in State Assembly Yashpal Arya, former chief minister Harish Rawat, former PCC president Pritam Singh, Saharanpur Lok Sabha MP Imran Masood, Congress MLAs Qazi Nizamuddin, Virendra Jati, Mamta Rakesh, Furkan Ahmed and other leaders visited the house of deceased  Wasim in Solhapur Gada village. The Congress leaders informed the family members of Wasim and the people of his village who had gathered in large numbers that a delegation of the party had met the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and the officiating state director general of police (DGP) on Wednesday and demanded a CBI inquiry into the entire matter under a sitting judge of the High Court.

The PCC president Mahara said that the party will also protest on this issue at the SSP office in Haridwar on September 1. He said that the party will hold a Statewide protest on the issue of deteriorating law and order situation on August 31. Mahara alleged that members of the minority community and scheduled castes are being attacked across the state and the government and police are providing protection to anti-social elements.

Lok Sabha MP Imran Masood said that he will meet the union home minister on this issue and demand a CBI inquiry. Former CM Harish Rawat said that a criminal has no caste or religion and if the police take action on the basis of caste and religion such crimes will continue to happen. The LoP Arya said that the Congress party will fight against such incidents in the streets and in the State Assembly.
