Sports and Youth Welfare minister Rekha Arya said that the establishment of a sports university in the State will provide international-level facilities to local athletes, allowing them to pursue higher education without having to move to other States. She stated this during her visit to the HN Bahuguna sports stadium in Almora on Sunday. She also unveiled the trophy for the Victoria Premier League, officially inaugurating the cricket tournament.

Addressing the people at the event, Arya said that the State government and the Sports department are consistently working to nurture athletes and provide them with quality sports facilities. As a result of these efforts, Uttarakhand is now one of the few States in the country that provides out-of-turn job opportunities to its athletes, she said.

She further stated that the State government has also approved the sports university, which will prevent athletes from needing to seek higher education opportunities in other States. The state also provides a four per cent reservation for athletes in State services. “The sports university will offer international-level facilities to the state’s athletes and make Uttarakhand a hub for sports talent in the near future,” Arya said.
