The State media in-charge of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Manvir Singh Chauhan has said that there is huge enthusiasm in the people of the State on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) but the opposition Congress and its allies are confused on the subject.
He said that the Congress party has always adopted a negative attitude towards any process of reform and development and has always remained negative on UCC. Chauhan asked- when efforts are being made to give equal rights to all the residents of the State then why Congress is having problems.
He said that the Congress has always unleashed propaganda against the UCC based on the reservations the Muslim community have towards it.
He said that the Congress always boycotted the meetings convened by the UCC expert committee which proves that it did not want to antagonize those opposing this law.
The BJP leader said that all the provisions in the UCC bill drafted by the Uttarakhand government are in accordance with the constitution and were finalized after thorough study. The expert committee convened more than 30 meetings, held 43 Jan Samvad programmes and took suggestions from 2.33 lakh people. The law gives equal rights to all the citizens and removes disparity based on religion and caste.
Chauhan said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced from the ramparts of the Red Fort that a secular civil code will be implemented in the country which is a stamp of approval on the UCC of Uttarakhand.
In many of its decisions the Supreme Court (SC) has advocated similar law for all the citizens of the country.
