Doctors here have suggested precautions ahead of the festive season flagging concerns over a spike discernible during this time every year in consumption of oily and fast food. They advise the people against excessive consumption of such food items as it invites various issues such as diarrhoea, vomiting and acidity.
The medical superintendent at Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital Dr V S Chauhan said that he observes a surge in the consumption of oily and fast food along with sweets during the festive season every year. “Instances of food adulteration also tend to rise during this time as cooks and restaurant owners cater to the increased demand by preparing items in bulk which may go bad in time. If the people are a little alert while gorging on food items available outside ahead of and during the festivities they may keep away from health problems like vomiting, diarrhoea, typhoid, jaundice, body swelling and more. In case they cannot shun dining out at restaurants they should prudently go for lighter options,” he said, adding that the diabetics and the pregnant women should be all the more on their guard while dining out amidst festivities.
Speaking on the same issue, a dietician at the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Richa Kukreti said that they encounter a significant spurt in cases of gas, acidity and vomiting along with others ahead and during the festive season. “This uptick is often attributed to increased consumption of outside food at festive gatherings,” she said.
Kukreti noted that during this time, the quality of outside food comes down alarmingly with the rise in demand, prompting owners of restaurants, stalls and other establishments to opt for cheaper or mass-produced ingredients. “The use of stale ingredients can result in these health issues. Individuals with conditions such as hypertension, obesity, high uric acid levels and low immunity are particularly susceptible. To be on the safe side of health, the people should try to keep the volume of consumption of outside food to the minimum. I would also urge them not to forget physical exercises in their festive exuberance,” she added.
