The Uttarakhand High Court disposed of the public interest litigation regarding student union elections in government universities and colleges in the State. The bench of acting chief justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari and justice Vivek Bharti Sharma arrived at the conclusion on the basis of the government order issued in the past. During the hearing on Thursday, the counsel representing the government informed that court that according to the government order issued on April 23, 2024, the student union elections were to be held by September 30. However, the universities did not follow the order. Organising the student union elections is not possible now as the time limit has lapsed. Considering this, the court disposed of the petition.

The counsel representing the petitioner stated that the government had failed to implement its own government order and the recommendations of the Lyngdoh committee were also violated. The democratic rights of the students are being dishonoured by not holding the student union elections. The government can withdraw its order and enable the student union election.

According to the case details, Dehradun resident social activist Mahipal Singh cited newspaper reports on student union elections in government universities and colleges on October 25. The petitioner pointed out that the government had issued an academic calendar in April this year, according to which the student union elections were to be held by September 30. Despite this, the universities did not hold the student union elections on time, the petitioner stated.
