Those engaged in animal husbandry and fisheries have welcomed the cabinet decision enabling them to sell their sheep, goats, poultry and fish to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. Officials said that this will provide a market to the local villagers near their homes while also enabling them to increase their income. Those involved in fisheries are of the opinion that the approval granted by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to various welfare schemes will boost the economy in the mountainous districts. Officials said that there is considerable scope for fisheries in the State.

The State government is operating various schemes to link fisheries with self-employment. Schemes worth Rs 200 crore are being facilitated in the State under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and Mukhyamantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. Trout rearing is being encouraged in cold running water in all the mountainous districts under the government schemes. The rainbow trout is reared in cold water which should be between 12 degrees Celsius and 15 degrees Celsius. The Fisheries department has been providing training to farmers for this purpose, officials said.

The government is laying special focus on the production and marketing of the rainbow trout which is also called the Himalayan fish. This fish is produced mainly in Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Tehri and Bageshwar districts. The demand for this fish is less in the local markets due to its high price but there is good demand in metro cities. The government is now also focusing on marketing this fish in other States which will also enable those involved in fisheries to earn more. The government also formed Uttara Fish to boost production through fishery cooperative committees and marketing. Uttara Fish is working to facilitate markets for Himalayan trout and other fishes from Uttarakhand.

Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that there is considerable scope for fisheries in Uttarakhand. The government is operating various schemes to link fishery with self-employment. Efforts are being undertaken to maximise the number of those involved in fishery under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and Mukhyamantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, he said.
