Sales of electric diyas soar as consumers priotrise convenience & durability

Various factors including durability, affordability and ease of use, have led people to transition from traditional earthen diyas to electric ones this Deepawali. Each year before Deepawali, there is a surge in demand for clay diyas as they hold significant importance in the Lakshmi Pujan ceremony. However, over time, the evolution of the festival and marketing influence has brought about changes, including a shift towards electric diyas. As a result, many diya sellers have expressed concern about declining sales during the festival season, particularly Deepawali.

Traditionally, people adorn their homes with lights and diyas for Deepawali, using them during the Lakshmi Pujan ritual. However, with each passing year, the celebration of the festival has evolved to incorporate more modern elements.

In light of current market trends, a vendor selling diyas at Paltan Bazaar, Krishna Prajapati noted that there has been a decline in the demand for traditional clay diyas over the years. He further said that this year, the prices of diyas have risen due to the increased cost of clay used in their production. Consequently, due to the enhanced durability of electric diyas compared to traditional earthen diyas, consumers have been transitioning towards electric options. As a result, the sales of earthen diyas have seen a decrease of around 10 to 15 per cent this year, he added.

Other vendors selling clay diyas have also voiced similar concerns regarding the decline in sales, attributing it to the growing popularity of electric bulb diyas.

Trader Sushil Chandok said that the sales of lights have been thriving during the festive season. He noted that there is a growing preference for electric diyas among customers due to their affordability and durability, making them a popular choice for annual use. Chandok highlighted that electric diyas are favoured over earthen diyas because they do not extinguish easily in windy conditions. ‘I have been using an electric diyas for the past two years. Their durability surpasses that of earthen diyas, which tend to break easily. This year, I have decided to purchase more electric diyas for convenient decoration throughout my home,” said local resident Neelam Chaudhary.
