The leader of opposition (LoP) in the State Assembly, Yashpal Arya has demanded that a comprehensive inquiry covering all the aspects of the bus accident in Marchula, Almora and the responsibilities for the mishap should be fixed.
He said that the death of more than 36 passengers in the accident is very tragic and it also raises a question mark on the passenger safety arrangements. The LoP said that road accidents and natural disasters have become very common and after every accident the government orders investigation but everything cools down after some time.
Arya said that overloading could be one of the causes of the accident for which diver, conductor, RTO and ARTO are responsible but the government should also fix the responsibilities for the pathetic condition of roads and public transport.
He said that the experts are of the view that precious lives could have been saved if the department concerned had installed crash barriers at the site.
The LoP said that the government has offered a compensation of Rs four lakhs to the family of the deceased in the accident. He said that the findings of the investigation report should be made public and stern action should be taken on those responsible for the accident.
