The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a resolution calling for restoration of the now- repealed Article 370 of the Constitution amidst saffron uproar on the third day of the maiden session of the Assembly constituted after the September-October election. Notably, the Article 370 which would provide a special status to Jammu and Kashmir had been abrogated by the Narendra Modi government 02 on August 5, 2019.

Presenting the resolution, the deputy chief minister and senior National Conference leader Surinder Kumar Choudhary said that restoration of the special status would strengthen national unity and fulfil the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir which has a distinctive cultural-political identity of their own.

Opposing the resolution tooth and nail, the BJP members said that the abrogation of the article was a settled fact and it could never be unsettled. Invoking Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s martyrdom demanding the repeal of this article, they said that they would under no circumstances allow its restoration.
