Sanjiv Khanna takes oath as 51st Chief Justice

Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India with the President Droupadi Murmu having administered the oath of office to him at a swearing-in held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He succeeded Justice D Y Chandrachud who had retired. Justice Khanna who was born on May 14, 1960, will demit office on May 13, 2025, on attaining the age of 65 years. Among the dignitaries present were the Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and former CJI J S Khehar, besides Justice Chandrachud.
Notably, Justice Khanna as a Supreme Court judge has been part of a slew of landmark judgments: upholding the sanctity of EVMs, scrapping the electoral bonds scheme, upholding the abrogation of Article 370 and granting of interim bail to former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
